in 1998 by the State of Bavaria to promote atmospheric
research and to assist the German Government in supporting the
United Nation's Global Atmosphere Watch programme (GAW);
located at Germany's highest
mountain "Zugspitze" with year-round access by
cable cars and - for cargo transport and special events
- a directly linked coghweel train;
equipped
with basic equipment financed by the Federal Ministry for
Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Environmental
Foundation (DBU), operated with State and Federal funds;
operated
with a unique master concept for utilisation: Observatory (GAW
Global Station), basic research (alternating scientific
users), and applied studies (SME's, industry);
offering
laboratories, observation and experimental decks, offices,
overnight accomodation, conference and meeting facilities to
the national and international scientific community.
