Biosphere and Geosphere

The Biosphere (Vegetation) plays an important biophysical and biochemical role in our climate system. The albedo, texture of the surface and leaf area index (LAI) are important parameters in climate modells. Through the exchange of gases and particles the biosphere is coupled to biogeochemical cycles involving also the atmosphere.

At high altitudes as on the Zugspitze summit the ground (Geosphere) is frozen year-round. Changes in the permafrost area are not only an indicator for changes in the climate, but they are also crucial for the stability of rocks and dangers of rcck fall. The permafrost found in the slopes behind Schneefernerhaus may be affected by a warming climate.
