The German Meteorological Service (DWD) operates the GAW Global Station Zugspitze/Hohenpeißenberg together with the Federal Environment Agency (UBA). At Schneefernerhaus and at the summit of Mt. Zugspitze the DWD measures all relevat meteorological parameters and atmospheric radioactivity as well as ozone and SO₂ concentrations. 

The Station is partner in the GAW-DACH cooperation including the German station (D), the Observatory on Mt. Sonnblick in Austria (A) and the Observatory on Jungfraujoch in Switzerland (CH) to monitor atmospheric change in the Alps.

The DWD also participates in the GAWTEC training courses to educate station personnel from other GAW stations.
